MAKE YOUR OWN HOOK AND EYE CLASP

HOW TO MAKE A HOOK AND EYE CLASP

making a hook and eye clasp
The S-Clasp is just one of many clasps you can make. Clasps are used to open and close a necklaces or bracelets.
There is a big variety of clasps and findings on the market to choose from. Handmade clasps and hooks will add a personal touch to your jewelry.

You can also use a jump ring with the clasp.

For almost all my necklaces, I create my own clasp. Often, I find this simple hook and eye clasp works the best for many designs. You just need about 7 to 8 centimeters of wire and can use any number of gauges depending on how heavy the jewelry piece is that you plan to connect it to. As a general rule, though, if I'm using gold-filled or sterling silver wire, I often use 18 or 20-gauge wire for this hook and eye jewelry finding.

MATERIALS:

  • 18 g or 20 g wire (plus minus 7 to 8cm)

  • Round nose pliers

  • Wire or side cutters

STEP 1

Grip the end of the wire with the tip of your round nose pliers.

MAKING THE LOOP FOR THE “S” CLASP

Follow steps 1-4 again for making the clasp.

STEP 5

Instead of making another big loop, you are going to make a small loop right across the small one you’ve already made. Position your pliers as shown in the photo.
